Hand Warmer Project
In this project our challenge was to make a hand warmer for our school store for games/events that we could sell. The big challenge for this project was that we had to have a 20 degrees Celsius change and we had to make it cost affordable. In our project we deviated from the norm of using salts like other groups but instead we used Activated Charcoal, Vermiculite, Iron Powder, and Salt. We came to this conclusion of this mixture from taking inspiration from normal hand warmers sold at stores. We adjusted our ratios of ingredients within to the optimal ratios for the best heat reactions. Our project at first had a lot of pitfalls and rocky beginnings but we managed to pull through. Our first two ideas we struggled with were a rice hand warmers and inspiration from MRE packets used by the military. So the rice one did not work because it was "Sciency Enough" and the MRE didn't work either because we were told to many times that magnesium sulfate was to dangerous to work with so we had to scrap both ideas. But throughout this project we just knew we wanted to do something out of the norm. We ended up having our project wrapped up in less than 2 days upon receiving the iron powder which we were absent of during that time of waiting we tried many different types of metals in hopes of it working. When we got the iron powder our calculations and results were perfect it was just a matter of measuring out exact numbers for our prototypes. Our basic design was a triangular felt case with a thin plastic sealed membrane so that the charcoal and iron powder does not leak through the cloth. If you look below at our slides you will see the costs and the science behind the hand warmer.
Reflection- Through this project our group went though many pitfalls and gaps in our progress. We as a group did many things well and had quite a few down falls. A few things we did well were working hard when we had to like at the end of the deadline when we really needed to get it done and and also we just got together really easily we worked really well. This is a group where were all friends and we could screw off but be productive at the same time. But the down falls of our group were we got really distracted and we went off to much the norm so we had to wait for the materials to come. Also we could of used our time a bit better during the beginning of the project. Some things we could of done to improve our project would to be a better seal on the separation points of the iron powder and the rest of the material and used a sew machine for tighter stitches for a better seal. Another thing we could of done was play with our measurements a little more so we could find an even better ratio.
